The Dental Implant Treatment Process

September 10, 2011 @ 02:28 AM -- by

If you are missing a single tooth or multiple teeth, there are plenty of dental problems that you will face as a result of this issue. Some of these dental problems are purely aesthetic, though there are issues with bone density and gum recession that need to be addressed as well. Dental bridges and dentures alone will not be able to address these matters sufficiently, but dental implants can. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are anchored into place using your jawbone and gum structures.

When you visit Midtown Manhattan oral surgeon Dr. Maurice Edwards, he will assess if dental implants are the right option for you. Candidacy for implant dentistry will be determined by the health of your bone structure as well as the health of your gums. You’re probably wondering what the dental implants process entails, so let’s briefly go over that right now.

After the consultation for implant dentistry as been performed, the first step is the oral surgery to place the dental implant. This will involve an incision in the gums and the creation of a small hole in the jawbone to accommodate the titanium dental implant or implants. The patient is sedated during this process, so he or she will not be under any undue pain or discomfort while the surgery is performed. Temporary dental bridges, dentures, or individual replacement teeth may be used at this time.

What follows is then a period of healing and recovery and fusion. Since the dental implants are meant to meld with existing dental structures, a period of a few months will need to go by to allow this to happen. This process is known as osseointegration.

Once this step of osseointegration is complete, then the permanent dental restorations will be crafted and placed. It should be noted that an additional step may be performed at the beginning to make a person a good candidate for dental implants. This step involves bone grafting or gum tissue augmentation to help improve the bone density and gun health of a patient.
